SmackDown Live Quick Hits! - 7/31/18; The Queen Returns

Tonight's SmackDown Live comes to us from the Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL!

The show opens up with Renee Young calling out the #1 Contender for the SmackDown Live Women's Championship, Becky Lynch. Becky talks about she wasn't born to be champion she fought to be champion and how she needs the pressure of being champion. The draws the company of the SD Women's Champion Carmella. The Champ seems to have had a change of heart and talks about how her haters constantly discredit her as champion. Carmella really doing a great job with the tears and her attempt to gain sympathy from the audience. Carmella extends her hand as a peace offering when the music of the recently fired James Ellsworth hits. Carmella blindsides Becky from behind with the Championship. She grabs a chair and is looking to do serious damage when Charlotte comes running down to make the save and run off Carmella.

Backstage Carmella gets a serious tongue lashing from SD GM Paige and because of Carmella's actions (and a jab at the GM no longer being able to be an in-ring competitor) she will face Charlotte tonight. If Charlotte wins the match at SummerSlam will be changed to a Triple Threat Match for the SD Women's Championship.

Before The Bar and The Usos do battle to see who faces New Day in the Tag Team Tournament to crown a #1 Contender for the SD Tag Team Championships, the New Day come down to ringside and have their own commentary table complete with a plate of pancakes.

The Bar def The Usos: Really fun tag match with tons of cool spots and a hot tag. The Usos were attempting a double plash when Cesaro ran in and hit a Uso with an uppercut. The other Uso (Hey, they're identical twins) tried coming down when Sheamus got his knees up on the impact and got a roll-up win. Again, great match.

Samoa Joe comes out to address his opponent at SummerSlam, the WWE Champion AJ Styles. Samoa Joe gives credit to AJ for being a legitimate Champion who brought legitimacy to the Title, but at what cost? Joe questions AJ's commitment as a father and family man. Those are definitely fighting words.

Jeff Hardy called out Randy Orton and while Orton was making his way down to the ring he was jumped from behind by Shinsuke Nakamura. Orton allowed Nakamura to hit the Kinsasha after stepping in the way at first. Nakamura exits and Orton beats Hardy down. Orton lays Hardy out on the commentary table and rips away at Jeff shirt and chain then takes water and wipes away Jeff Hardy's facepaint. Orton claims, "enigma erased".

Becky Lynch is happy Charlotte is back but she isn't happy her odds of winning at SummerSlam drop significantly if Charlotte wins tonight.

Zelina Vega def Lana when Aiden English distracted Lana while she was on the top rope. Vega won via roll-up.

Daniel Bryan and the Miz had a really good back and forth segment with Daniel laying down a challenge to The Miz at SummerSlam. The Miz didn't accept but they threw some pretty good barbs at each other.

Charlotte Flair def Carmella: This was actually a pretty decent match from Carmella. Charlotte did not show signs of ring rust. Charlotte's moonsault off the barricade was a cool spot. In the end, Charlotte was able to get Carmella to tap from the Figure 8. The SD Women's Championship Match will now be a Triple Threat Match. SmackDown Live ends with Becky in the backstage watching Charlotte celebrate in the ring.

I thought tonight's SmackDown was great. It was a little light on the wrestling side but the build-up going into SummerSlam was great. Everything on the SmackDown end seems to have a purpose, a story which translates to great TV. What did you think of tonight's SmackDown?
