SmackDown Live Recap - 8/1/17; The Dream Match

SmackDown Live is absolutely stacked tonight featuring Chad Gable vs. Rusev and a dream match in every sense of the word when John Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura do battle. The winner will face Jinder Mahal at SummerSlam for the WWE Championship!

AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens for the US Title

Very good back and forth match. AJ and Kevin kept the crowd hot and into the match going counter for counter without missing a beat. Things get a little dicey at the end when Owens inadvertently strikes the referee (almost looked as if Owens completely missed the punch) sending him down temporarily. Owens goes to hit Styles with the Popup Powerbomb but Styles reverses it into a roll up. The referee is in position and counts the three....with Kevin Owens' shoulder off the mat!

Backstage Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan are with the injured official when they are interrupted by an irate Kevin Owens. Even though Owens has a legit gripe with the decision he doesn't make the situation better by putting his hands on the referee. To make it up to Owens he will have a rematch for the US Title against AJ Styles at SummerSlam. Daniel Bryan adds a special stipulation to the match: Shane McMahon will be the special guest referee. I can dig this.

The Usos come out mocking the SmackDown Live Tag Team Champions the New Day.

Fandango has disappeared and Tyler Breeze is on the case. I have no clue what is going on but apparently, Breeze knows who kidnapped Fandango.

Sami Zayn vs. Aiden English

Nothing really to note other than Aiden English got a roll up win about five minutes into the match. That truly caught me by surprise.

Mike and Maria Kanellis come out to poke fun at Sami for losing.

Carmella and Natalya vs. Becky Lynch and Naomi

I enjoyed this match very much. It has been constantly said but Naomi is one of the most athletic women on the entire WWE roster. Carmella and Natalya do a great job of keeping Naomi away from tagging her partner. The great partnership doesn't last however when Natalya has Naomi locked in the Sharpshooter. Naomi is able to get to the ropes and Carmella tags herself in despite Natalya not ready to exit. Carmella locks on her Code of Silence submission but Naomi reverses it into a Rings of Saturn submission for the two out win. Again this was a pretty good showing from the ladies.

Rusev vs. Chad Gable

Gable very wisely starts the match going after the legs of Rusev attempting to bring him down. Rusev's power allows him to take over going into commercial break. Back from break and Gable catches Rusev with some amazing suplexes. Gable with a beautiful moonsault for a near fall. It's amazing how Gable has been able to take it to Rusev this whole match even with Rusev catching him with a kick to the dome. Gable puts Rusev in an ankle lock and the crowd is hot. Rusev is able to kick Gable all the way out of the ring and when Gable gets back in he gets hit with a jumping side kick. Rusev locks on the Accolade and Gable has no choice but to tap out.

Rusev gets on the mic and said no one can beat him and he doesn't have a match at SummerSlam because everyone is scared of him. Suddenly "The Viper" Randy Orton makes his way down to the ring. Rusev doesn't allow Orton to get in the ring to which Orton says if he was him he wouldn't allow him in the ring either. Randy does enter the ring and lets Rusev know he's never beat Orton, Orton is not afraid of Rusev, and Orton is going to be Rusev's opponent at SummerSlam. Rusev starts yelling in Bulgarian and goes to attack Orton but gets hit with an RKO.

John Cena vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - Winner faces Jinder Mahal at SummerSlam for the WWE Championship

Absolutely incredible match totally living up to the dream match hype. Nakamura was his usual easy going self early on, definitely getting in the head of Cena. The ending sequence from the first AA from Cena to the end was amazing stuff.

I can't wait for Jinder vs. Nakamura at SummerSlam. What did you think of SmackDown Live tonight? Comment below or reach out to us on Social Media:
