NXT TakeOver: Chicago Recap

Tonight NXT brings you NXT TakeOver: Chicago. Asuka versus Nikki Cross and Ruby Riot for the Women's Championship, Tyler Bate defends the U.K. Championship, Bobby Roode defends the NXT Championship against Hideo Itami and more.

Eric Young (Alexander Wolfe and Killian Dain) vs. Roderick Strong

Roderick did the smart thing and ambushed Killian and Wolfe from behind by coming through the crowd. The bell rings and Roddy goes off. Finally Young takes control of the offense after an elbow under the chin. Strong goes back on top after a running clothesline. Killian and Alexander try to get involved but Roddy is able to fight them off. With the referee distracted Killian Dain bulldozes Strong with a running cross body. Young takes control from here keeping the pace very slow. After a long string of keeping Strong grounded Roderick creates space with a second rope dropkick. He gains momentum with a series of backbreakers ending with a suplex flapjack variation. Action spills outside where Young hits a wheelbarrow neckbreaker on the outside. Back in the ring with Eric Young on offense. Young hits a beautiful elbow drop for a two count. Roll up from Strong for a two. Roddy now has to fight Killian and Wolfe off which helps Young who rakes the eyes of Strong. Both men battle in the corner ending with Strong knee striking Young sending him crashing into Sanity outside. Roddy bangs off a running high knee strike then breaks out his classic release suplex into a backbreaker known as End of Heartache for the win.

I enjoyed this match and thought it was a good way to kick off the show. I've always been a fan of the End of Heartache maneuver, great to see it used NXT.

Looks like WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross will be calling the action with McGuinness for our next match.

Tyler Bate (c) vs. Pete Dunne - WWE U.K. Championship

The match starts with some great back and forth chain wrestling from both men. Pete Dunne works the wrist of Bate who breaks the hold with a dropkick. Action spills to the outside where Dunne hits Bate with a forearm. Dunne attempts to smash the fingers of Bate who was able to fight Dunne off. Still on the outside Dunne hits Bate with a release suplex onto the apron. Back in the ring with Dunne continuing to work the limbs of Bate until Bate is able to turn the tables into a delayed exploder suplex. Dunne goes for another release suplex but Bate lands on hits feet, hits a standing shooting star press then a German. bate attempts another shooting star press but Dunne catches him in a triangle. Dunne smashing Bate on the crown of his head. Bate fights out of it with a massive powerbomb. Bate hoists Dunne up on his shoulders and takes him and takes him on a ride with an airplane spin. From here on out this match goes into full on show stealer, five star, match of the year mode. These two did everything. Dives, haymakers, near falls....the gauntlet. Watch this match. Watch it again. Hands down my Match of the Night.

Asuka (c) vs. Ruby Riot vs. Nikki Cross - NXT Women's Championship

Asuka sets the pace on offense with a series hip attacks on both her opponents. Riot is able to get the better of Asuka sending her to the outside. Looks like Ruby was going to attempt a dive before she is cut off by Cross. Nikki rolls Ruby back into the ring to work her over. Cross lands a neckbreaker but doesn't see Asuka coming off the top with a dropkick. Fast forward to Ruby coming in the ring and getting caught in an ankle lock that gets broken up by Cross. Ruby and Nikki go at in the ring until Asuka gets involved once again. With all three women in the ring it looks like the reign of Asuka is in jeopardy. Asuka attempts to German suplex Cross and does so thanks to a superkick assist from Riot. Fast forward to Nikki going off and dropping Riot with a reverse DDT on the apron then catching Asuka in the ring skirt then tees off with forearms. Amazing. Much like the last one this is hard to keep up with because the work is so good. Ruby hits her arm ringer pele kick on Cross but the pin is broken up thanks to a running Shining Wizard from Asuka. The Champ covers both women and retains her title. Another phenomenal match.

Bobby Roode (c) vs. Hideo Itami - NXT Championship

Roode starts off the match seriously underestimating Itami and it almost cost him the match. Hideo rifles off some stiff punt kicks on Roode. Itami mocks Roode with own "Glorious" pose. Roode takes over after countering a Tornado DDT. Roode slows down the match controlling the offense. Itami catches Roode with a backslide for a two count. Both men standing when Itami smacks Roode straight in the face. Roode comes back with a boot then Itami comes back with a running straight kick. Itami still keeps the offense on his side sending Roode into corner. Itami strikes Roode's shoulder with some stiff kicks directly on the mark. Roode basically is fighting with one arm but he's able to stop Itami with a vicious spinebuster. Itami attempts the Go 2 Sleep again but Roode fights out to the outside. Roode goes into the steel steps shoulder first. Itami looks for a shotgun dropkick but Roode ducks. Itami starts grabbing at his ankle. Both men beat the ten count and trade strikes. Itami looks for Go 2 Sleep but the damage on his ankle doesn't allow him to keep Roode up. The Champion hits the Glorious DDT but Itami kicks out! Itami hits Go 2 Sleep! Bobby Roode rolls out of the ring. Itami has to roll Roode back in the ring for the cover but Roode kicks out. Itami attempts Go 2 Sleep one more time but Roode reverses it into a Glorious DDT! Roode holds on to the neck of Itami and lands another Glorious DDT for the win.

What a match. Both men told an amazing story of digging down deep and persevering in the clutch.

Authors of Pain (w/ Paul Ellering) (c) vs. DIY - Ladder Match for the NXT Tag Team Championship

DIY start the offense off quick disposing of AoP before grabbing ladders. AoP stop both men before they can get the ladders into the ring. DIY is able to fight off both men on the outside. With AoP down DIY go for the biggest ladder in the arena. AoP stops them once again until Gargano takes AoP out with a middle role suicide dive. DIY finally get a ladder in the ring but have to fight off AoP once again. This time the ending doesn't go their way with AoP taking over offense. They attempt to ascend the ladders but DIY use ladders to stop their attempt. Ciampa heads up and is stopped by Akem. AoP goes for the Super Collider Powerbomb but DIY wisely grab onto the ladder. AoP push the ladder and DIY go crashing down. Ciampa who is wrestling with an injury clutches his leg. AoP use the ladders as weapons. With DIY down AoP head up the ladder. DIY show signs of life until AoP decide to smash them with a ladder. AoP grab another ladder from under the ring. This one is way bigger. They set up these ladders parallel to each other resting them on the barricades. A giant ladder up between the two parallel. A battle for control ends with AoP down on each ladder respectively. DIY go up the giant ladder, Gargano and Ciampa on opposite ends, and dive off crashing into AoP! After a while DIY and Akem are climbing up a ladder in the ring. Now all four men are in the ring on opposite ladders. Ciampa pushes one but Gargano leaps to the other. Rezar goes down! Gargano on the ladder by himself! Gargano reaches for the Titles but is pulled off...by Paul Ellering?! Gargano knocks Ellering out with a Superkick! AoP reenters the ring and begin beating DIY down for what they've done to Ellering. AoP have Ciampa down to a knee. They grab a ladder and look to smash Ciampa directly in the face. Before impact Gargano pushes Ciampa out of the way. Gargano takes a wicked ladder shot right under the jaw right in front of Ciampa. AoP begin going up the ladder with Ciampa too preoccupied with his partner. Before AoP can grab the Titles Ciampa grabs one of the AoP members and suplexs him off the ladder into another ladder in the corner. Amazing. Gargano stops the other AoP member from grabbing the Titles. How Gargano is on his feet is beyond me. As Gargano and Ciampa head up the ladders, fingertips away from unbuckling the belts, when AoP toss the ladders from under their feet. With DIY dangling in the air AoP grab ahold and destroy DIY with the Super Collider Powerbomb. Authors of Pain ascend the ladder, grab the Titles, and win the match. What a brutal, physical, ladder battle this was. Definitely another top notch match.

DIY are left alone in the ring to massive cheers from the fans. Both men walk up the ramp, shoulder to shoulder, and while they say their final goodbyes Tommaso Ciampa attacks Johnny Gargano! What is happening?! Ciampa hits Gargano with two stiff knee shots, one sending Gargano on top of the announcer's table. Ciampa climbs in top of the table, picks Gargano up, and leaps off with an Avalanche Air Raid Crash through tables below. The crowd is stunned with others chanting "F You Ciampa!" The show ends with EMTs attending to Gargano as Ciampa looks on. Wow.

Here's how Twitter voted on the show overall.
