Raw Recap - 1/9/17

Tonight on Raw HBK Shawn Michaels makes a special appearance and Mick Foley promises The Undertaker!

The show begins with Commissioner Stephanie McMahon about to give GM Mick Foley is Year End review. While Foley has done many great things as GM he's also made a few mistakes, such as promising The Undertaker on Raw when it isn't certain Undertaker will show up. They are interrupted by Seth Rollins. Braun Strowman comes storming in demanding Goldberg and Roman Reigns for spearing him to end Raw last week. Rollins takes exception to Strowman barging in and both men get into a brawl.

We were supposed to have a 2 on 1 Handicap Match for the US Championship but before the bell Strowman comes down to the ring and proceeds to lay a beat down on Roman Reigns along with Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho. Seth Rollins comes down with a chair. He and Roman clear the ring before an angry Stephanie McMahon comes out to put an end to the madness. The 2 on 1 Handicap Match will happen later tonight. Right now Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman will do battle.

Seth Rollins vs. Braun Strowman

This match followed the usual giant vs. small guy formula. Commentary really making a point of how hard it is for Rollins to get Strowman off of his feet. Match ends on a double countout. Strowman looks to destroy Rollins after the bell but Seth is able to fight him off with a steel chair in hand.

Sasha Banks and Bayley are hanging out backstage talking the potential of Bayley winning the Raw Women's Championship. They are interrupted by Charlotte then Nia Jax who beat down both women. Nia grabs Charlotte by the collar then leaves.

Jack Gallagher vs.Drew Gulak

Fun technical match. Nothing major to note other than I enjoyed it. After the match Gallagher issued an invite to his nemesis Ariyah Daivari to a parlay tomorrow on 205 Live.

Shawn Michaels made an appearance to promote his new movie which comes out January 20th. He's interrupted by Rusev who demands Michaels get his wife Lana a role in the film, which is already done. It was an awkward exchange, I think Rusev was a little star struck and forgot where he was. Enzo and Big Cass join the party and the one liners follow from there. Rusev volunteers his pal Jinder to take on Big Cass with HBK and Enzo in his corner.

Big Cass vs. Jinder Mahal

Fairly one sided match with Big Cass getting the win with the Empire Elbow. HBK hit Rusev with the Sweet Chin Music to a massive ovation.

Neville vs. Lince Dorado

I love the idea of Neville totally abandoning his aerial offense for a more ground and pound aggressive offense. Nothing says commitment to character like abandoning your highlight reel finisher for a submission. Neville gets the win with a Rings of Saturn finisher. After the match he attacks Lince and reapplies the hold. Rich Swann comes out to make the save and sends Neville retreating. I'm really enjoying the story development from the Cruiserweights.

Backstage Sasha banks and Bayley barge into Stephanie McMahon's office demanding a tag match against Charlotte and Nia Jax. Stephanie takes offense to the intrusion but grants the ladies their request. The only problem is that match is happening tonight.

Luke Gallows vs. Sheamus

Karl Anderson and Cesaro joined the commentary team. Anderson made sure to remind everyone that he and Gallows were champions in Japan. If you're a fan of big dudes just brawling it out you'd enjoy this one. Galows is severely underrated as a big man. Anderson and Cesaro begin fighting at the commentary table which distracted Sheamus. Gallows looks to end the match but only gets a two count. Cesaro gets the upper hand at the top of the stage this time distracting Gallows and when he turns around he gets hit with a Brogue Kick. Pretty good match.

So Mick Foley was about to catch a pink slip for promising The Undertaker and not delivering. Just when the axe was about to fall the gong hits and the Gatekeeper of WWE, The Undertaker appears. He made sure to let everyone, including Stephanie McMahon, know that he does what he wants, when he wants, and he goes wherever he wants. Oh yeah, HE'S GONNA BE IN THE FREAKING ROYAL RUMBLE. This Rumble is turning out to be a doozy.

Bayley and Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax and Charlotte

Pretty decent match despite Bayley and Sasha not being at 100%. Bayley thought she had the winning while rolling up Charlotte however the legal woman in the match was Nia Jax who bulldozed Bayley to get the win.

The New Day decided to give Titus O'Neil another shot to maybe join the group if he could carry a keg of Booty Juice (that's a real thing you can't tell me otherwise). It was similar to the task Titus had back in 2010 during the early days of NXT in which Titus took a hilarious tumble. This time around Titus didn't tumble but he did drop the keg prematurely resulting in a loss. New Day tease Titus and he shoves Kofi who challenges Titus to a match.

Titus O'Neil vs. Kofi Kingston

Simple match but I enjoyed watching Titus squash Kofi's comebacks. Kofi gets the win with Trouble in Paradise.

BROCK LESNAR WILL BE LIVE ON RAW NEXT WEEK!

Roman Reigns (c) vs. Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho in a 2 on 1 Handicap Match for the United States Championship

Roman rushed Jericho and Owens as they were making their way down to the ring but the numbers game caught up to Roman as Jericho and Owens beat him down. Owens and Jericho launch Roman into the shark cage. Finally the action goes back in the ring and the bell sounds. The match is finally underway. Roman had plenty of moments where it looked as though he could handle both Owens and Jericho but after a Codebreaker from Jericho and an apron powerbomb from Owens the title reign of Roman is in its dying moments. Owens and Jericho roll Roman back in the ring and Jericho hits him with a Codebreaker for the win. Chris Jericho is the NEW United States Champion. The Best Friends Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens close the show celebrating with their titles.

Overall I enjoyed this edition of Raw more than last week. Each segment was simple and to the point. While the wrestling wasn't anything to go crazy over tonight, Raw wasn't its usual chore to get through so I can't complain.
