SmackDown Live Recap - 8/30/16

The Tag Title Tournament continues, Baron Corbin takes on WWE Champion Dean Ambrose, and more!

The show kicks off with Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon rewatching the Talking Smack segment from last week. Surprisingly, Shane McMahon says Daniel Bryan owe Miz an apology for his comments. He cannot provoke talent in that manner. Bryan agrees, but he calls Shane hypocritical seeing as he has beef with Brock Lesnar. Interesting.

Miz comes down to the ring and to my delight he is still raging mad over the events from Talking Smack. He berates the crowd for not being smart enough to realize that wrestling the way he does has allowed him to continuously work and do what WWE asks of him. Some call it soft but to Miz its smart. Hard to disagree.

The Hype Bros took on the Vaudevillains in a first round match in the SmackDown Tag Team Title Tournament. This was a fantastic showing from The Hype Bros who won with the Hype Ryder to advance in the tournament. Mojo Rawley has really improved leaps and bounds and I'm sure the hot tag set up would have got a bigger reaction from the crowd if the casual audience were familiar to Mojo. In due time the Hype Bros could be major players.

AJ Styles is backstage reminding everyone he is the face that runs the place. He advised Apollo Crews to write it down so he doesn't forget.

The two meet in the ring for a match. Very interesting to see Styles come with an excellent ground game to combat Crews' high flying ability. AJ Styles has the capabilities to make anyone he is in the ring with look like a million bucks and the case is no different here. Valiant effort from Crews and a great showing but in the end he falls victim to the Phenomenal Forearm.

Renee Young conducted an interview with Heath Slater at his home in West Virginia. Man, this was something special.

Bray Wyatt came out and cut the typical Bray promo on Randy Orton. That doesn't mean that the promo was bad, just that all Bray Wyatt promos sound the same. This is coming from a guy who loves dark, macabre imagery in wrestling! It says something when Randy Orton can out-promo you which is exactly what he did. I'm looking forward to the match at Backlash I can't say why really. It feels like we've been waiting years to figure out where WWE is going with Bray Wyatt.

Naomi and Becky Lynch teamed up to take on Natalya and Alexa Bliss. Nothing noteworthy happened aside from Naomi's entrance and Carmella attacking Nikki Bella who was doing commentary at ringside.

Heath Slater and Rhyno took on the Headbangers in the SmackDown Tag Team Titles Tournament. Yes. The Headbangers. From the Attitude Era. To be honest I didn't see any ring rust at all from Mosh and Thrasher. The crowd wasn't really into Headbangers but then again they haven't performed in WWE for 16 years.

Kane chokeslammed some jamoke named the Milkman.

AJ Styles was ringside for commentary during the main event between Baron Corbin and WWE Champion Dean Ambrose. Nothing too exciting about this one. Corbin dominated the majority of the match with a ground and pound offense but the champ was able to stay in the game. Corbin was working Ambrose on the outside when Styles decided to coach Corbin who didn't take too kindly to the gesture. While Corbin and Styles argue Ambrose shoves Corbin into AJ. Ambrose and Corbin reenter while Styles attempted to hit Ambrose with a kick. Ambrose ducks and Styles ends up hitting Corbin so the match ends in a DQ. Styles looks to hit Ambrose with the Phenomenal Forearm but Ambrose sweeps the leg causing Styles to straddle the top rope. The show ends with Ambrose exiting while Styles agonizes in pain.
