SmackDown Recap - 4/14/16

Two matches are announced at the top of the show: AJ Styles vs Alberto Del Rio and the main event featuring Sami Zayn vs Chris Jericho.

Written by: Angela Delgado

Smackdown starts with Maryse in the ring talking in French ready to introduce The Miz for Miz TV. Did you know that they're husband and wife? After gloating and a barf inducing makeout sesh, Zack Ryder comes out and interrupts. I like this new aggressive side to Zack Ryder. He comes out looking for a rematch for the IC title as Maryse was playing to the crowd and asking if they wanted to see a rematch, Miz accepts until he says Zack has a match scheduled already with Baron Corbin.

Baron Corbin def. Zack Ryder

Unmatched but far from a squash match. Zack Ryder held his own until Corbin hits the End of Days for the win. Baron Corbin tosses Ryder outside the ring and out comes Dolph Ziggler for the save. I'm guessing we'll see these two in the ring at Payback. My guess, a pre-show match. Commentary line of the match comes from Mauro Ranallo, "Baron Corbin collects skulls like Trevor Story's been collecting homeruns". Trevor Story is a rookie for the Colorado Rockies. I love a good baseball reference.

Backstage Segment with Renee Young and Kevin Owens

Renee asks K.O. if he has any inside information on Sami Zayn for his match with Chris Jericho. Owens ays he was lucky he was escorted out on Monday and that no one is there to help him tonight. Kevin tells Renee to ask Sami if he has inside on tonight's main event.

Emma def. Paige

Before the match started Emma cut a pre recorded promo portraying her new attitude. She was that bubbly nice girl and was rejected while Becky Lynch comes along and gets a shot at the Women's Title. The match was okay but it was fast. I would like to see longer programs with the women but it's only a two hour show. I don't know what's next for Paige, but her being in a program for the Women's Title might be far away. Catch her on Total Divas though...

A look back at the shocking appearance of Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows attacking The Usos on Monday Night. Another great line from Mauro Ranallo "The 3 time IWGP Tag Team Champions looking to go number one with bullet in the WWE!"

IT. IS. HAPPENING.

Flashback to Raw replaying the main event.

It's bittersweet seeing the replay of Bray Wyatt straight dominating as a babyface. I hope his calf injury isn't too serious and can come back sooner rather than later. If not, he provided us with one of the greatest wrestling gif ever:

Enzo Amore def. The Ascension to Advance in the Tag Team Championship Tournament (Sponsored by Booty-O's!)

Enzo and Cass looked comfortable in their first WWE TV showcase. Poor Ascension has got to be a little jealous of Enzo and Cass' rapid success and popularity coming from NXT. Also, Can we appreciate Enzo's pants?

AJ Styles def. Alberto Del Rio

Only on Smackdown you would get a match like this. This match was highly entertaining. Scary moment in the match when Del Rio went for a inverted suplex on Styles and Styles landed weird on his neck. Seemed to be ok though. AJ goes for the Phenomenal Forearm, Del Rio counters with the set up to the arm bar but AJ gets the roll up victory. Would love to see this match again on RAW. I don't know what the future holds for League of Nations but Del Rio can be a major player in the mid card or even in the World Title picture.

The Vaudevillains def. Goldust and Fandango (Goldango)

No Golden Truth tonight as Goldust found another partner in Fandango for some reason. Didn't work as The Vaudevillains got the win to advance.

Main Event: Sami Zayn vs Chris Jericho

The match barely starts and Kevin Owens makes his way to the ring. Not far behind is Dean Ambrose making his way down the ramp. He's handing out flyers to his new show, the Ambrose Asylum. A great match is happening before our eyes but some great banter was happening in commentary between Kevin Owens and Dean Ambrose. Chris Jericho attacks Ambrose on the outside and Zayn suplexes Jericho into K.O. As Zayn got Jericho in the ring to set up the Helluva kick, K.O attacks Sami Zayn in the ring. The match ends in a no contest. Dean Ambrose and Sami Zayn clean house and that ends Smackdown. Pretty cool to hear Sami Zayn's music as Smackdown goes off air.

Enjoy the show? Smackdown continues to get better and better and proves again that less is more. Less promos, more wrestling. Comment below with your thoughts and follow me and The Wrestling Chronicle on Twitter!
